OCR History

World OCR

Fédération Internationale de Sports d’Obstacles was formed in 2014 to unify the sports or obstacle course racing and related sports, including, but not limited to obstacle competitions, obstacle racing, combine fitness competitions and adventure racing.

Ancient History

708 BC Ancient Pentathlon: run, long jump, javelin, discus, wrestling

1040 Fell Running: 1.5-20 km, open terrain, many hills

1860 Steeple Chase: 3,000 m run + 28 barriers & 7 water jumps

1876 Cross Country Running: 4-12 km, open terrain

1912 Modern Pentathlon: fencing, swimming, show jumping, pistol shooting, track run

1946 Military Pentathlon Obstacle Run: 500 m + 20 obstacles​​

Early History

1980 NZ Alpine Ironman (now coast-to-coast)​

1982 WildTrek Australia

1987 Tough Guy (UK): 12 km + 25 obstacles

1989 Raid Gauloises

1995 Eco-Challenge

1996 HiTec US National Series

1996 Cross-Fit (CrossFit since 2000), functional fitness

1997 Sasuke, originally Japan, now 157 countries

2009 American Ninja Warrior (Sasuke): 50 – 100 m, obstacle competition

2010 Spartan Race: 5 – 20 km, 20 + obstacles including running, jumping, javelin, throwing, carrying (closest to Ancient Pentathlon)

2010 Tough Mudder (competitive since 2017)

2012 1st Spartan World Championships
2016 1st OCR European Championships

2018 1st OCR Asian Championships, World Team Challenge, World Univeristy Championships, World Youth Championships
